Carey Alvord

As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Carey Alvord has spent the last 21 years working in underserved, diverse communities and family based mental health programs. Carey is a fost-adopt parent and her husband served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years. They have a beautiful transracial family. Carey was born and raised in Paso Robles, completed her B.S. at Sacramento State University and her M.S. at Southern Christian. She later moved to San Diego. Carey was a trainer at several National Conferences including A.T.T.A.C.h. (Association for Training on Trauma and Attachment in Children) and the National Wraparound Conference. She was also requested as a children’s mental health expert guest speaker on San Diego’s KUSI. As a seasoned child /youth therapist and trainer, she became the South-East County Regional Supervisor for a large non-profit. The San Diego communities gave her more understanding of issues facing people of color. With her love of education, she moved to a Program Manager role for a large San Diego based High School Day Treatment. As an advocate for equity in employment, she hired highly skilled, diverse employees that best represented the community served. Currently Carey is back home and works for Grizzly Youth Academy and is Co-Chair of the training and Education Subcommittee as a resource for the Mayor’s Diversity Panel. She has a heart for helping, but also a strong voice against racism which she has used in conversations on social media, with family, friends and even strangers. Her approach as a therapist and a human is with empathy, compassion and an understanding that we have not all had the same opportunities. Carey is most passionate about helping people heal along with resiliency building (especially with youth who have experienced complex and racial trauma). She is excited and honored to be a member of this panel.
